Peter Baer Galvin currently serves as the Chief Technologist for Corporate Technologies. In this role, he leads as the technical authority for a premier systems integration and value-added reseller company, specializing in products and services from Sun, Oracle, Cisco, and Veritas.
Professional Journey
Peter’s distinguished career began in 1989 at Yale University as a Systems Programmer, where he managed extensive computer networks and various hardware. This role was followed by a significant tenure at Brown University as a Systems Manager, overseeing over 160 Sun systems and leading a technical team.
In 1995, Peter joined Corporate Technologies in Burlington, MA. As Chief Technologist, his responsibilities span a wide range of technical and strategic areas, including systems architecture, security, performance tuning, and high-availability systems. He is well-versed in products like Sun/Solaris, Checkpoint-1 firewalls, Veritas disk management, and Cisco router products, and has a strong foundation in Oracle architecture.
Educational Background
Peter’s academic journey is as impressive as his professional one. He earned a Master of Science in Computer Science from the University of Texas at Austin and a Bachelor of Arts with High Honors in Mathematics (with a Computer Science concentration) from Wesleyan University.
Authorship and Teaching
Peter is not only a technologist but also an accomplished author and educator. He co-authored the best-selling textbook “Operating Systems Concepts” from its 3rd to 6th editions and has been involved in various other publications. His expertise also extends to teaching, with tutorials such as “Advanced Topics in Solaris Administration” and “Introduction to Unix Security” under his belt.
Contributions to the Tech Community
An active contributor to the tech community, Peter has been a system administration columnist, a security columnist, and a contributing editor for various magazines and online platforms. His work includes maintaining the Solaris Security FAQ and Unix Secure Programming FAQ. He is also a known presence in tech conferences, sharing his knowledge on security, system management, and more.
